At least... Let's see, even in 1970, I could fill a Buick LeSabre from empty (on fumes) to full for $7.50 in expensive Washington, DC, and hamburger was around 70 cents a lb., so I'm extrapolating some of these prices back to when I was less aware of them. Gum and Life Savers were a nickel. So were Nik-L-Nips, hence the name. Other snacks were a dime. So was a pay phone or a 7-oz. returnable bottle of Coke from a machine. Gumballs were a penny. Stamps had just gone from 3 cents to 4 cents. New cars were around $2,000, but Ramblers were less than that. Paperbacks were well under $1. Houses were probably still under $25,000.

You could also go into a shoe store, stick your feet into the bottom of a box, look down into the top of it, and see from the bones in your feet if your shoes fit right. Shoe salespeople from back then got cancer from X-ray exposure being around those unshielded machines.
