Set your default browser to Firefox and see your icons still work
If they do, just rely on Firefox as your default browser
If not, maybe there is a problem with your icons.

^ i agree dont use IE^
lemme explain this into better detail so you will understand..
IE wil let pepole onto your pc now about your problem...
1.scan your pc for viruses and spyware
2. open mozilla and open the extentions box then click the get extentions link, in the search bar type in IE tab and install the extention, this extention will allow mozilla to use the IE engine to render pages if there not loading correctly (in other words mozilla becomes IE in that tab
i would take this as an omen to not use internet explorer or at verry least to use the newest version. its the worst internet browser you can use

IE is the slowest of all web browsers... except if you want to view HTML pages... then it's relatively good... but for the vast majority of newer and more sophisticated websites you should use Safari or Fire Fox

start up in safe mode (F8)
go into the following folders and delete all the contents including folders in there
open windows explorer
kill everything in them, spare NONE !
-----------------
- delete all files and folders in this directory !
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\*.*
-----------------
- delete all files and folders in this directory !
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\*.*
-----------------
look for suspicious programs or something dont look right in here
- then delete that particular file/s and/or folders in this directory or uninstall it with Add and Remove programs !
c:\program files\*.*
-----------------
- scan and view anything that looks odd (maybe delete)
C:\windows\temp\*.*
and then empty RECYCLE BIN
After that scan for virus and spyware if u have the program/s.
-----------------
Then restart in normal startup and see if this continues.
If it does then I strongly and urgently request you to reinstall your Operating System and your drivers etc...
Then when u get connected to the net
download
http://firefox.com and use this instead of Internet Explorer
