I'm left-handed and hold my pen "differently" as well... The middle of the pen rests in the crease of my index and middle fingers and I hold the tip with my index, middle and thumb. It's the only way I feel comfortable and I have much neater hand-writing this way. My hand writing was absolutely atrocious holding it the "normal" way and I discovered this more comfortable and neater way in elementary school. I've been holding it my own way for nearly 25 years now and while people do comment that it is "strange" no one has ever complained that they can't read my hand-writing.
So my answer is that there is no right or wrong way to hold your pen. Besides, in today's world isn't there much more to be concerned about than how somebody holds their pen? Who are they to say you are wrong? People like you and I have just discovered a better and easier way of doing something that works for us. Be proud!

Everyone has a different way of holding their pens, brushes, facing the paper and son on. No one way is "right". Some ways might distort your perception of the subject, but you'd figure that out pretty quickly.
As far as I can see, you ONLY need to worry about holding your chopsticks "The right way" (and I'm not even sure about THAT!).

Here is my opinion:
Well, there is absolutely nothing wrong with holding a pen that way as long as you can write the words you are trying to convey. I have an elementary school teacher who wrote with her thumb at the bottom of the pen and the index finger at the top of the pen. It looks to me but she can write well with that hand writing style. .

It usually goes away after awhile but you should just try to grip your pen in different ways like trying holding it between your middle finger and your index finger.

my daughter holds her pen in an odd way also, they tried to make her write different, but she still holds it her way. I say do what is comfortable. She has beautiful handwriting.

Well I am artist and I draw! The only thing I draw with is a mechanical pencil and people find it amazing that I can do the shading like that. We are different people and we all, think, act, different there is nothing wrong with having your own unique way! The awesome thing is that we are all different and that we can learn from others!

Why do you care about the way you hold the pen. Tell everyone thats judging you : "maybe you should try it my way and get a nicer handwriting." That's what counts

Whatever works for you is okay. I have an odd writing style also. My thumb bends way out and people say that it looks like my thumb is dis-jointed. But, its the way I write, whether it looks orthodox or not.
