I am self taught. Learn your chords. The best way to play is to play with someone who is already good. That is how I learned. Learn to feel your way with strumming. Up and down with smooth action. Do not hold the pick too hard. There is a right way to strum the guitar using your finger nails. If you do this, it will not hurt and you are practicing correctly.

Start with simple songs with 3 chords. Normally, they are A - D - E. Once you master those chords, you can concentrate on strumming.

Practice a song that you know by heart -- like Happy Birthday to you, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.. These songs are one stroke songs. Strum the guitar each time you open your mouth to sing. You will get the hang of it and soon you will try something else differently to make it sound better.

You just have to try and suck for the first time, then you will get better. That's the only way to do it. A good friend, or a friendly store musician can do this for you easily...

Good luck.

Acoustic and electric guitars are tuned the same. You can theoretically pick up an electric guitar and be able to play all the same things you already know on acoustic. In reality, you'll find a few mental adjustments will be necessary, but it's not a big deal. In spite of how it looks when you see teenagers hammering out heavy metal, electric guitars require a lighter touch than acoustic. They have lighter gauge strings which are easy to press...but a bear-claw grip can pull strings out of tune easily. The low action (string height) gives the strings less room to vibrate, so a powerful strum will cause fret buzz. In this respect, acoustic guitars are much more forgiving of a heavy handed player. The fact that they are forgiving is one of the reasons starting out on acoustic is a wise choice. People will tell you that electric is easier to play because of the lighter strings. While it's true that the strings are easier on your fingers, an electric guitar introduces a lot of extra variables and distractions. To answer your "Additional Details": You can play on acoustic and then play the same tune on electric, but it may not sound the same. I play professionally in a country band and I'm the only guitar. Sometimes a song will call for both electric and acoustic sounds. I can play the acoustic parts on my electric, but they never sound "right" even when I use an acoustic guitar simulator pedal. The notes are the same, but the tonal qualities of an acoustic guitar are hard to duplicate on electric. That's why most guitar players eventually end up (at least) with one of each.

The way I learned was by listening to my favorite records
and also using a simple chord chart.
there is no wrong way to play a guitar. Just work out a method your comfortable with and be persistent.
You will eventually get it if you really wish to.

you just have to strum hard on the strings so it sounds like your playing them all at once. you have to know the song you are trying to play so the strumming pattern is correct and doesnt sound bad. you have to get the notes you are playing at the right amount of beats. again you need to know the song well for it to sound right. there are also alot of help things online or cds you can buy
