I'm a product of the '80's. I can only go with who i have seen play. No disrespect to players in the '50's &'60's, but like i said, i did not see those such as Ernie Banks,PeeWee Reese etc. But I'm keeping it real. This is who "I" grew up watching play the greatest position on the field:
My Alltime:
1: Cal Ripken jr.
2: Ozzie Smith
3: Omar Vizquel
4: Barry Larkin
5: Tony Fernandez
Honerable Mention:
Robin Yount
Garry Templeton
Ozzie Guillen
Dave Concepcion
Current:
Derek Jeter
Miguel Tejada
Hanley Ramirez
Jose Reyes
Michael Young
Rafael Furcal
Jimmy Rollins

Mikey did you notice my number 3? Easy homie I got luv for Omar. Peace!

1. Jimmy Rollins - he has lifted the Phillies from embarresmant

2. Hanley Ramerez - he is playing great on the close to worst b-ball team in the mlb.

3. Omar Vizquel best fielding shortstop, not in numba 1 because of bad batting and hitting.

4. Troy Tulowitzki - my rookie of the year because of the preformance and ryan braun = too many errors

5. Derek Jeter; he is not ALL that overrated, but I still hate the Yankees and love the Red Sox.

So here are my fave shortstops that are active, curtosy of shassan95

1. Hanley Ramirez (if the Marlins weren't so bad he would get MVP consideration with the numbers he's had)
2. Jimmy Rollins (he quietly continues to put up numbers for Phillies and is the leader of that team)
3. Jose Reyes (same as Rollins, exept plays for Mets)
4. Troy Tulowitzki (no one on the east coast knows this guy yet - cause he plays for Rockies - his numbers are impressive too)
5. a tie (because numbers are very similar and both play great defense)
Carlos Guillen (Tigers) & Orlando Cabrera (Angels)

Taking current players
As much as I hate the Yankees Derek Jeter is still first
After him
Jose Reyes
Jimmy Rollins
JJ Hardy
Miguel Tajeda

I find it weird all of them have the letter J in their name
