When you hear people say that the troops are uneducated low-income college-aged teens/young adults who blast war music in their tanks (as seen in Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11), does it get to you? Or do you agree with them? What's the consensus (of Y!A members that is) on "supporting the troops?"

This is an unbiased question - I won't insert my personal comments.

As taxpaying American citizens, it's basically by default, we support the troops at least in providing them the tools and money they need to do the job they signed up for. Whether one is a "troop lover" or not is an individual preference. In my view, some want to make it a personal issue by saying that we should just "stand behind them" no matter what. Honestly, I could care less. After all, it's an all-volunteer force. They knew the risks involved. If troops truly were strong, they would just do their job and not be concerned about popular sentiment back home. Some believe that they do it out of patriotic duty, but deep down, there are always underlying selfish motives when one enlists, usually for the military benefits or out of sheer foolish pride. They are not just doing it solely for their country. In fact, the majority of conflicts the US was involved in had little or nothing to do with "defending" America but rather serving economic interests or those of a self-serving elite.

It is impossible to support the troops without supporting what they are doing. While some of the enlisted members of the military may be less educated, or from a poor background, the officers are among the most quality educated citizens we have. The military is a good learning experience for life. Two years of military service is more valuable than a graduate degree, in regards to their future. I say this because having hired both college educated, and former non-com military, the military personnel are by far the best employees.

You should support our troops regardless of your opinion of the war, they are placing their lives on the line.

I did not agree with the Vietnam War, but I served 1966 to 1969 and enlisted (not drafted), the reason I did is because I believe that all humans deserve a chance to be free from dictatorships and communism.

Any time the United States has troops in harms way it is absolutely essential that we give those troops our full support. If you care about those troops at all, you must always show a united face to the enemy. No enemy would dare oppose our troops if they see a unified USA behind them filled with resolve and hungry for victory.

However, if we show dis-unity, or lack of seriousness or lack of resolve we make the job those troops have to do much more dangerous and take a much longer time.

First, Michael Moore is a butchering, lying idiot. Look up a documentary done on Moore that points out how he lies and edits everything to distort the truth. You can find it on youtube. "Michael Moore Hates America"

Here's the first of 10.

Second, those troops have been and are laying their lives on the line for our freedoms, so we all better support the troops no matter how we feel about the mission!

Yes we must support the troops and recognise all the people who have been maimed or died and the pain of victims families, and hope they come home soon and pray for all the troops who have died in vain in a war based on lies.

We must also recognise all the victims and families of 9/11 and tell them how sorry we are that Bush, instead of continuing a war on terror decided to invade Iraq where there was no indication of al Queda according to the CIA (Bush falsified the meaning of the pictures), FBI, MI5, etc.

The Democrats were duped but, having no contradictory information readily available they 'politically' had to go along with Bush.

Tony Blair, of Britain, was equally duped and even though his agencies of intelligence told him the US was wrong went eagerly along with Bush. The British people were told that Iraq could bomb them in 45 minutes which was quite an incredible fantasy.

Ninja -- we seem to be losing freedoms the longer Bush is in power.

Personally, I believe that not supporting the troops is unpatriotic. Farenheit 9/11 is propaganda and is largely untrue and should never be used as a legitimate source. The military helps college-aged kids pay for college and get a jump-start on their life.

I believe that even though i do not support the war, i will support the troops, because whether they are blasting war music or not, they are still risking their lives in my (America's) name.
