No. The distance between your phone and the nearest tower is a line of sight vector from your phone and the tower, regardless of what exchange the call went through. So the area code has nothing to do with wireless range. In the case of wired DSL, though, it is a major factor as you have to be with in 1800' of the CO exchange.

YES you do need to put the area code before the phone number! When you send a text message and you hit send it is sent up to a tower to be sent to the recipient and if there is no area code it is endlessly searching and never delivered! Sorry but Dad is right this time!
