The defense is abysmal, as usual, and the once-potent offense now sputters. The running game is laughable, the pass protection is nonexistent. Who can solve this? Who can bring the nastiness back to the defense? Who can bring the power running game back to its heyday? Who can take a mediocre quarterback and smack the opposing D-line in the face enough that said quarterback is palatable (e.g. Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart, Tommy Maddox)? There is a coach, a tough coach, a projectile salivating coach who built a reputation on and won a Superbowl making a team do exactly what Notre Dame cannot - play defense, run the ball, and protect the quarterback. This coach is also unemployed and has had a nice long rest from the spotlight. Were I a decision-maker for Notre Dame athletics, the prospect would be tempting. What do you think?

Cowher may be the answer ...
The Irish aren't even the best winless team in the country. Colorado State owns that dubious honor.
About the best thing that can be said for the Irish right now is that they might be the best 0-4 team in the country ... might.
Right now the BGS Ratings have Notre Dame ranked 99th out of 120 teams, worse than Duke and Central Michigan but marginally better than New Mexico State, Army & Toledo and still significantly better than Rice, Temple and Florida International.
The good news for Irish fans is that they can't drop much lower, so it should be all good from here on in. Let's hope.

Maybe, and no.
ND made a big mistake in firing Willingham b/c Ty could coach, and teach. and he could recruit to a school with high academic standards. He didn't get a chance. Weiss is all about schemes, and he can't teach kids anything. He should be fired, or he needs to hire more assistants that can teach blocking and tackling, etc.
Cowher is not a good choice. I think he will re-surface somewhere - like for the Panthers, or for Duke University - he has relocated to the N. Carolina to be close to his daughters. While he brings passion, I am not sure how much more knowledge of the college game (and all that goes into running a college program) he brings than Weiss. Again, he would need good assistants to teach what the pros already know. There is a reason that people like Norm Chow leave Pete Carroll - great assistants that can teach, and move up accordingly. Weiss has no good assistants to do what he needs them to do.

I always liked Bill Cowher...but who knows?...I think he wants to get back into the NFL...
I agree with the guy above saying the offensive line coach needs to go...The offensive line is exactly the problem with the offense...
And I don't think Weis should have fired the defensive coordinator that almost won a championship with Holtz...He should have fired the secondary/defensive backs coach...

I honestly doubt Cowher would go to a college team. They could try but he isn't in need financialy and I'm sure he would rather take a up and coming team ( Detroit or Arizona ) and bring them to fruitation. Mr. Cowher has a knack of taking bruised turds and making them a contender.

Should they? yes they should. Will they? no they won't b/c if they get rid of him now, he will be getting the money he is owed and is signed through 2015. If they get rid of him, they should try to go after a guy like a Bob Stoops or a Pete Carroll type of coach.

They should fire Charlie of course, and hire the first female college football coach. It would be a radical move, and another step forward for woman's equality.

I think that would be a big mistake to pursue Cowher. Do you really think he is capable of sucking up to some snot nosed 17 year old kid and begging him to come to his school?
I think he would be a terrible college coach.
