Ummm, perhaps try gun control?
Oh, that's right, your country is full of pro-gun lobby groups (NRA, I'm looking at you) who pour billions of dollars in "donations" to politicians to ensure that the US will NEVER vote in a President who advocates gun control.
Learn a bit about gun deaths in the rest of the world and you will realise that it doesn't have to be this way. Here in Australia we have very strict gun control and very few gun deaths every year.
It's not rocket science. Less guns = less gun-related deaths.

Most of the statistics about children killed by use of guns are bogus because they include people through age 25 - hardly children.
Any "child" killed who is involved in the drug trade (children are used as runners and assassins because, if caught, are subject to short sentences with records purged at 18) should not be counted as a victim. They are participants which makes them criminals.
You have a choice of cracking down on the criminal who uses a weapon or allowing plea bargaining to eliminate the weapon part. If a mandatory (and non-bargainable 5 years were added to sentences, their illegal use would drop severely.
If you want to cut down further on illegal gun use, allow all honest people who want to carry a gun to do so. It has been proven that crime drops when the criminal realizes that many intended victims have the means to fight back.
Since many of the gun crimes are carried out by illegals, according to your link, any person arrested for anything should be checked to see if they are in the country legally. If they are not, once they have completed their sentence, they should be deported. Any other illegal family member here should be deported immediately upon the arrest. Even if the person is found not-guilty of the accused crime, they should be deported immediately. That would eliminate many people who have no stake in this country. Any illegal with a weapon should go along with the rest of the family who are living with the same culture.

i truly hear you and wish i could answer with something hopeful for you but sadly i think this gun control issue is totally ignored by the lawmakers of this country(u.s.) because they are so heavily lobbied at all times by the NRA and other organizations that want to keep things pretty much as they are....and we live in a country whose government thinks violence is the answer to all their political problems as well as in how they deal with their own citizens with very little provocation, if any. so in light of these overwhelming paradigms in place now, and just the sheer numbers of weapons out in the public already.....i just really don't 'see' a workable solution short of mass enlightenment, and what are the chances of that happening?...probably pretty slim
this is what i think

Because in America we're so naive that we believe that kids will automatically learn responsibility when they are 18 or 21, we ignore safety issues, like gun safety and alcohol use when they are children.
