Close to mt. Rushmore ( about an hour before it) is the town of Hot Springs, S.D. There is a GREAT hot springs pool there called Evans Plunge. Very near hot Springs is a fantastic dinosaur dig where they have built a building over and around the dig. it has been going on there for years. It is well worth the visit. See websites below. Have a great time. Be sure to go to the EVENING viewing at Mt. Rushmore...it is fantastic. Go early...there is plenty of parking, but it is a long walk to the ampitheater.

Stay at the Olde Main Street Inn in Chadron. Historical hotel, now a B&B. Be sure they're open for dinner or it will be slim pickings in Chadron.
Scottsbluff National Monument is a classic stop. There's the Pioneer Museum in Kearney. Carhenge in Alliance is a memorable roadside attraction. Inquire locally for directions, it's not trivial to find.
Near Mt. Rushmore is every tourist attraction known to man. Google Black Hills South Dakota for information.
Did you know that Mt Rushmore was built as a tourist trap, rather than a monument?

We vacationed there two summers ago from Northern CO (road trip). Yellowstone is not on the way....
After you leave Cheyenne WY and if you decide to head north on I25 you can stop by Chugwater WY and have some of their infamous chili.
You can also go via Hot Springs South Dakota and stop off at the hot springs pool. Then from there visit the Wind Caves which is just south or Custer SD. There is the Flintstone amusement park in Custer SD. Take a detour through Custer State Park and drive the Needles Hwy!
Have fun and don't forget to go to Rochford SD and have a beer and burger at the local saloon! Hold your glass as you set it on the table as it just might go sliding onto the floor!

A little off the beaten path and slightly odd - CARHENGE. Carhenge is the whimsical recreation of Stonehenge, fashioned from American-made automobiles at Alliance, Nebraska.
The grave of Mother Featherlegs - Only Monument in the US that Immortalizes a Prostitute - Lusk, Wyoming
The Black Hills, in the southwestern part of South Dakota, is one of the treasures of the world. Its unique rock formations and mysterious caverns, demonstrated by such wonders as the Wind Cave and Crystal Cave Park.

Don't pass up the Devil's Tower. If you ever saw "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" you won't want to miss the chance to see it in person.
President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower the first national monument in 1906.

I drove there a couple of years ago, nothing worth while to see unless you go way out of the way. Be sure to visit Crazy Horse while you're there
