here is the storie. i got a sata hard drive 250 gig. i then discovered that it needed a card to inerface with MY computer. i got a sata card that accepts 2 sata drives. i guess they copie one another. well i put the win 98 disk into the cd drive and it started to format the sata drive. it then went into theinstallation mode and copied the first set of files onto the sata drive. then it rebooted and when it came back on it displayed the win 98 logo and that is all, nothing further and it acts like the computer is locked up, no keboard action works.
i will put xp pro on it as soon as i get win98 to boot up completely. i don't have the xp boot cd at this time only the upgrade. don't want to go out and get a new mother board or computer for this if i don't have to i will just get a different drive. again thanks.

I don't think you can use SATA to install Windows 98, it most likely doesn't have the support for it. By the way, why are u still using windows 98?

you have a big problem here....

windows xp upgrade uses windows 98 drivers, be cause the upgrade never came with drivers.

Did you know you can install windows xp upgrade without having windows 98 installed on your system?

Here is the trick on how it is done.. providing you can get all the drivers for your hardware. it will work, but it is going to take you over a week to get windows xp up to date. because you will need to update to service pack 2. then install all the updates after service pack 2. and all this will need to be done online.

If you're on dial up you will never do it in a month of Sundays. anyway here is how it is done

make a folder (directory) call windows, in that directory make a file called win.exe........ this dose not have to be a real windows.exe file...

As long as there is a windows directory and win.exe file there you're xp upgrade will install... all the upgrade dose is look for the windows directory and the win.exe file...

your going to ask me how do you make a win.exe file.. easy open up word pad make a document... I love my computer... then rename it win.exe put that into windows directory and bingo you have what the xp upgrade cd will look for.. eg windows directory and win.exe

Here is a better Idea.. move up to a better operating system... one that will do you're computer system proud being that it is an older system...

go to the websites below and check out Ubuntu Linux you can download it for free.. it will have all your drivers. It has all the software you will Ever need and it will not cost you a dime... it leave window vista ultimate in the dark ages.

Partition the hard drive in half then boot up with floppy or CD and when you get to drive a:\ type the followings
a:\ format c:/s press enter and follow to the end of format. remove the floppy or CD turn off computer then turn it on it should boot up to c:\ type dir/w press enter
all you see on the computer is one file called command.con.
