Watch Kanon 2006 (http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=1530 ). It was made by the same people who did Air TV, and it is similar in many ways. It is also very, very good.

All Hayao Miyazaki films are classics.
If you like kids cartoons anime then Dragonball Z is also good.
For sci-fi type themes try Ghost in the Shell and Evangelion.
