While I've struggled with this question about geniuses in general I think that he was born a genius.

Genetics does play some role in intelligence. Environment influences also. While everyone has a chance to live up to their full potential; I think that potential varies.

I think Einstein was born with the ability to think differently than most people. This allowed him to see things more clearly.

Einstein was a genius alright. He was also severely dyslexic and had an extremal hard time with math. How he became a genius I have no idea. He was just able to think things through differently than most others I guess

I don't think anyone is born a genius. I think everyone has an equal opportunity to be a genius. They just have to work towards gaining the that knowledge to become what they most desire.

He may have had the capacity to become a genius and the circumstances brought him to that issue but, in the beaning of his early life he was kicked out of school, I think it was his math class, for failure to study and, failing: sent home with a failure.
Later when he worked in the office for patents he was bored with his work. He was basically a lazy person. At Princeton he refused to take interviews because it interfered with his naps, he didn't sleep well and napped constantly.
He also gave his classes at his convenience due to his basic laziness and, his inability to get to class on time for lectures.

A genius he might have been but on time, never.

Became real good at geometry, and got a degree in physics. I guess something in him just turned on. But here's a link that shows pretty much his life...
