im partially epileptic, and although ive not had a grand mal for years, i do have 'moments' (kind of deja vu leads to a blackout dont remember what the hell just happened when i come round) and ive noticed its ALWAYS been around my period or just after - does this affect anyone else?

im on low dose of medication basically as a preventative thing, and i had the idea of upping the dose at these times of the month, but when i mentioned this to my gp and then to my consultant i just got blank looks and the idea was just completely brushed off.

the thing is theyre men and i dont know if they understand how much periods can mess with your body. i tend to get really emotional around my periods too, could the mixed-up and depressed state of mind am in at these times be affecting my epilepsy instead?

If you don't get a satisfactory answer from your doctor, ask him again. Ask for a specific answer with details and reasons. Don't let them brush you off again. Explain to them that your seizures seem to worse during your "monthly time". If they keep ignoring your concerns, I think I'd find another doctor, preferably a female.

Your hormone levels could very well be causing the seizures to intensify during your period. Talk to your gynecologist, too, and see if birth control to stabilize your hormone levels might help.

Hello sweetheart, I have two daughters who are Epileptic both have Peti Mal, the younger one has hers completely controlled by medication and drives her car.
My older daughter has a blank period for two or three seconds and sometimes forgets what she has been talking about immediately before it happens.

Hers is controllable and she holds down quite a stressful and this does not seem to affect her, if she gets up set then she is more likely to have one of her blank periods.

I can recommend a consultant at Harlow`s Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Essex, His name Is Charles Cockerill he is probably the top man in the country regarding Epilepsy you could try ringing his secretary for an appointment.

Please do not think of altering you dosage yourself as this can have serious side effects on your health you mention you get emotional about the time of your period, this could be causing the problem you refer to. If I can of any further help please ask another question and I will give you my email address

that happened to my late wife she had test after test and believe it or not the answer was very simple. as a woman approaches her period her temperature increases slightly 1 - 2 deg, this can bring on a seziure or blackout very easily as this increase in temp can cause a part of the brain that regulates our body temperature to go hay wire a bit.
hope it helps xx

try getting a female dr, to give you a 2nd opinion. I would just double the dosage anyway but i dont know if that s a good idea for you. try it but dont sue me if it doesnt work.
