I had an "episode" last night and I'm not sure if it is related to past issues, or just a menstral thing. I've had severe depression as a teen, never diagnosed, but had the symptoms and have been doing well the past four years. I've recently moved away from my family and friends and get down at times. But the past few times I've had my period, I've had severe emotional trouble the week before my period. I have trouble having any feelings, and when I do I get so upset I cry all day. I call last night an episode because it wasn't the usual sob, it was like my mother had just died. Then all of a sudden, I stopped I think mostly because I wanted to. I'm not sure if I should talk to a gyno or a psychologist.

Are you on birth control pills? If yes, go see your gyno and demand she change to something that's not going to mess with your depression/emotions.

If you're not on birth control pills, I'd see an endocrinologist and have my hormones tested. Since this seems centered around your period, and an endocrinologist is a specialist in hormones, I'd visit him.

You could visit a psychiatrist, who would deal with the symptom of depression, but I feel like this would be fixing a symptom, and not dealing with the problem. At least try to deal with hormone issues first.

When I was tested (15 years ago), I had 10% of the estrogen that I should have, 400% of the progestin, and no testosterone. She started me on a birth control pill to make up for the missing hormones (this was EARLY menopause) and it helped tremendously. I take Ovcon.

Later, I found out that EVERY female on my father's side of the family had severe depression, and none of them were able to lead normal lives without hormone supplements. Funny how it runs in families, huh?

Get well, feel better.

healthy Diet while work wonders for your depression and your hormones. And I'd start by seeing the gyno. They can prescibe depression medication and do.
