I think it is because everyone believes that their opinions and their ways are the best.
And if we were to unite, someone would have to concede that their beliefs are not the superior ones.

Its probably hardwired into us to form groups and compete. The mentality in any part of the world that has even a little more than needed to survive is that the spoils go to the victor. They do call it the human race after all and second place is just "first loser".

Human Nature makes us aggressive and territorial. Conflict arises through our need to socialise in groups and when these groups have differing opinions, religions, social status, race, etc. tensions can boil over. It is inherent that people are drawn to others that are similar to themselves. None of this is an absolute. Just a majority practise.

Why would I want to get along with someone who is less wealthy than me?......He would only want to borrow & bum things from me.

Why would I want to get along with some who is a different colour & race to me?......can see no advantages there.

Why would I want to get along with someone who follows a different football team to what I do?

The same applies to politics, religion, sexual preferences etc....
