Science is a subset of Philosophy.
Science is a very formalized study of cause and effect. It has it's origins in the Philosophical concept of Logos, the logic of how the world works. The first question of science is "Can you prove that theory?"
Philosophy means Love of Thought. You can think anything. Most Philosophers attempt to be logical, but this is NOT a requirement. A Philosopher who feels their theories must be put to the test to be valid, is a Scientist.
Plato for example believe all things on earth were poor replicas of perfect spiritual forms. As far as anyone can tell, he pulled this concept out of his poor replica of the perfect spiritual @ss. He never suggested any way to prove this theory.
Which makes Plato a Philosopher & not a Scientist.

Both are similar in their pursuit of objective knowledge and a unitary explanation of the world. Science for the most part deals with material reality and seeks explanations for the physical world. Philosophy generally seeks explanations of things that are more abstract - justice, love, truth - all of which we can know something, but not fully. Science would also say the same thing about the physical world - we know a lot, but there's so much more to be known.
