I'm guessing that older refrigerators use R12, so if I had a working one with R12 in it, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be possible to take the R12 and use it to recharge the car AC

Most, if not all, late model cars use R-134, not R-12. But if it is an older car with R-12 it can be done if you have a vacuum pump that will remove the freon from the refrigerator and a reclamation machine to remove the oil from the used freon. If you are in the US, you need a refrigerant handlers license from the EPA and if you had one you would not have asked this question.

Don't try it unless you have a reclaimer/recycling unit. Did the old refrigerator quit working? If it did and there was a problem with the compressor you will be moving the contaminants into your car ac. If you don't clean the old refrigerant you can destroy the ac in the car. Most of the older frigs. did use r12 just like what is in the car. There should be a plate on the frig, usually by the compressor to tell you what refrigerant is installed in it.

Fridges use r22, older/pre 85 cars use r12. Modern vehicles use 134. And no ,you do not have the knowledge or the equipment to do it safely. You will have to refit your older vehicle to 134 or use the old tried and true 2-60 ac method. 2 windows open at 60 mph.

The refrigerant would be contaminated. It is also the wrong type. If you need to ask, you probably are not licensed so the fine would be huge if you got caught.

I think pipe smoker filled up with the wrong tobacco. It is in fact, just the opposite. Refigerators used R22, older cars usedR12. Newer cars use R22. Make sure which one your car takes.
