It was Lincoln v. McClellan. Lincoln the Republican candidate was committed to pursuing the war against the rebellious states until the Union was restored.
McClellan, the Democrat candidate, ran on a platform of asking for immediate peace with the states in rebellion and, in essence, granting them their independence from the Union.
Had McClellan and the democrats prevailed in the election there would have likely been two separate nations with no guarantee of reconciliation between the tow nations.
As it was, Sherman's victory at Atlanta gave the Union renewed hope that the war could, and would, be won and Lincoln gained the victory and the Union was saved.

We held a peaceful election in a time of civil war. One of the predsident's former generals opposed him in the election without an advantage and without fear of reprisal. The general lost and had to swallow defeat. It was a reaffirmation of the president.
