or to try to find approval from our peers? we put our deepest feelings out there to share them, not because we think our writing is great or anything... it is about the feelings behind the words and rhymes, the metaphors and similes.

by the way, there are no grammatical laws for poetry unless it is a class assignment. and even then, most teachers will give some leeway as long as you write.

so c'mon people, i'll say it again:

PEACE LOVE EMPATHY!!!

The thing I try to remember is that if I didn't like it at all, I shouldn't say anything, because people put a lot of their hearts into their poems and that's the biggest reason to write it in the first place. There's not much point to answering only for the sake of correcting a spelling mistake. The only time I do that is when I really love the poem in the first place.

Constructive criticism doesn't have to be harsh. There's got to be some love in it. :) and heck, if the answerer is so good with words himself, he can find a way to make his point without being too rude, right?

People ask for an honest opinion, so I do give them one. I'm not gonna lie and tell someone I think they are an awesome poet, when I can't stand to read their poems... That is how most of the singers come to American Idol... people lied and said that they were good so they went on there and thought that Simon was the one lying...

I give an honest opinion.

Criticism is how good gets made better and this I think is the honest aim of the serious critics reading and commenting on these many poems. Of course some commenters aren't serious and their opinions are pretty much worthless. But if you get ten useless critiques (no real thought in them) and one worthwhile critique, it's worth it. I see it that way anyway.

I agree. When I post a poem on here I except any criticism to be nicely worded and explained. Not just slander or petty insults. and I hate it when I read someones poem and give a very nice opinion of it and someone else comes along and says something like "How horrible, you should give up writing all together". How does that help anyone? It's just spiteful, just plain spiteful.

When I read a poem I want it to touch me, if it don't I go on. Here others ask for me to help them, if a poem don't touch me I ask why. I don't want to tell someone their poem stinks, I want to see if I can tell them where the problem is and how to fix it. When I post a poem for you to read and it don't touch you I want to know why not. If three people see different things wrong in my poem, possibly they don't like it but if the three see the same thing. You see what I mean?

when i tell somebody that their poem is bad, i don't want to be mean, i just want to give them my honest opinion. yes, some of us do it for fun, others do it to release feeling. But we are all here for one reason, when we post our poems, we all want people to be honest, but we also want them not to criticize us way to hard or give us a bad feedback. i think we should though. that way the writer can find his or her weakness or error and correct it, and make themselves better writers.

People who take peotry seriously don't take kindly to fumblings without the effort to read real poets and without any schooling. Inspiration without study and effort is just brain gas.
