There are NO pros as far as I'm concerned. What you're talking about can infact be VERY dangerous for either the hitch hiker, or the hitch hikee.

pros- you get to see the country. Most rides would be free. You can meet some interesting people.
Cons- You could die. You can meet crazy people. Ever seen saw? I'm sure it happens somewhere.
no worth it.

Well...it does get you where you need to go when you have no other mode of transportation...the con is that you may never arrive due to the fact that some psycho may kill you..so i would defiantly walk if i were you.
