Any "savings" you'd see in the price of an onlive website will quickly be eaten up by the shipping you'll pay to have them delivered.

I don't know how much they'll cost in your area, but your best bargain would be to comapre prices at stores near you.

If you don't want to spend that much on a hermit, realize they need a lot of items to keep them successfully. They need a tank (preferably a 20 gallon for when they're full grown), substrate (sand or coconut fiber deep enough to completely burrow into), a hiding spot, two water dishes (one for freshwater, one for saltwater which they require), dechlorinator for the water, sea salt for mixing the saltwater, a food dish, food, natural sponges, heater/lamp (so they stay the proper temperature), and a variety of larger shells in the future. They also do better in groups, so you should consider getting three rather than one.

If this sounds like more than you're prepared for, you may want to reconsider your choice of pet. Hermit crabs aren't as "simple" as some pet stores or advertising on the hermit "kits" make them out to be. One of the biggest challenges is to keep them at a high enough humidity (they do breathe through gills which they need to keep moist) to keep them alive, without having their tank get moldy.

Crackers or cereal will definitely work. Trust me on this, at one point, I had 50 hermit crabs, talk about running out of food for them a lot! Yeah, a wet paper towel will work fine, DO NOT give them tap water though, bottle water definitely. Tap water has weird affects on hermit crabs (like making their legs fall off, I know, crazy). You could always (if you have something like this) give it a very small bowl of water. When I say small, I mean really small. If you fill it too much the hermit crab could drown because they actually sit in the dishes to drink. XD Good Luck with your little guy!! Their loads of fun!!

sure it isnt a tree crab. People always think those land crabs are hermit crabs. They are related but the tree crabs live on land with a shell and the hermit crabs live in the ocean of the carribean. But anyways tree crabs are about$5.00-$15.00 in any pet store and hermit crabs are $2.00-$10.00 at a pet store depending on their size.

I own a pet shop in flordia for the last 26 years

Good Luck

There are lots of places you can get cheap hermit crabs, but they are often sick and die soon after you purchase them. If you want to ensure that you are getting healthy crabs that will live there full life span, try your local pet store.
