The main role of the French Resistance during WW2 was to carry out specific acts of sabotage against the german forces and to gather intelligence.
They liased with agents and radio operators who were sent from England usually by Lysander airplanes which could land in small fields or by parachute or by small boat,occasionally by submarine.
In the months before D-Day the intelligence gathering and sabotage played an important part in the success of the invasion.
The British government would send coded messages on the BBC to indicate what they would like the resistance to do.
There were several different groups or reseaux which normally acted independently and there was a certain amount of rivalry between those led by the Gaullists and those led by the Communists.

They fought the Germans who occupied France by : waging a guerrilla-style war with them; sabotaging railroads to impede troop movements; hiding Jews, providing them with false documentation and helping them across the Spanish border or the English channel; helping prisoners escape; hiding British aviators downed in France and helping them get back to England; monitoring troops movements and communicating them to General De Gaulle in London...
