Physics question, I can't seem to get this problem, please help.?
Two forces, 381N at 8deg. & 307N at 25deg. are applied to a car in an effort to accelerate it.?
What is the magnitude of the resultant of
these two forces?

What is the direction of the resultant force (in re-
lation to forward, with counterclockwise con-
sidered positive)?????
within the
limits of -180deg to 180deg

655.52 was the answer for the first question... and so if 655.52 is the resultant force, what is the direction of deg?

Resolve the two forces in rectangular coordinates, using sines and cosines. Then add the x components of the two forces together and do the same for the y components. The result is the x and y components of the "net" force. Then using Pythagorean theorem, solving for the hypotanuse, you get the magnatude of the resultant force. Use inverse tangent to get the angle.

Okay, here was my original question:
Two forces are applied to a car in an effort to move it.
First force: 10 degrees west of north @ 450 Newtons
2nd force: 30 degrees east of north @400 Newtons
I'll answer your question with this example (the questions sound similar, if not the same altogether).

Split the vectors into their own x and y components. It sounds like you know how to find them with trig.
Then, add the y components of both vectors.
DO NOT ADD THE X COMPONENTS.
Subract the x components: the forces are in different directions in regard to the x component, but they are both going forward in the y direction.

Use trig to find the hypotenuse (magnitude of vector) and inverse tangent to find the angle (tan=opp/adjacent. angle=inverse tan x opp/adj) The angle that you are trying to find is clockwise from north.

I guess you just needed that last part for your answer, but mine came out correct so... hope I could help!!
