I worked on a golf course for over 10 years and have dispatched literally a 1000 + gophers.
If you have a really big lot totally infested with gophers: use phos-toxin tablets. It's a restricted use pesticide, but if you own the property, it would save you big time and money to jump through the hoops of getting a property owner's permit. Check with your local agriculture extention.
I personally have had fair to poor results using the over the counter baits and smoke bombs. They're expensive,(but convenient!), but you don't really know if the problem is solved without being able to see the deceased rodent, as one obtains with traps. My weapon of choice at home.
Regardless of what's used, I find a fresh looking gopher mound and with a shovel dig a round hole 18 inches around and shovel depth. Pull up the sod and look for two or more horizontally running burrows.( If none, try another spot or wait for the gopher to push up another mound.)Baits, bombs or traps should be placed in EACH hole for best chance of success........
Around my house I use "Mac-a-Bee" type spring traps, available at most hardware stores. A store clerk should be able to show you how to set it. Buy two, for both sides of the run as described above.
Traps are good for mild and ongoing problems because you only have to buy the traps once.(When using this trap tie a string to the trap and the other end to a stake in the ground for easy retreival.)
Gophers like an "air-tight" burrow. If a gopher "feels a draft" he will instinctvely want to plug it because it's a potential entry point for his #1 enemy: the gopher snake! Because snakes can't dig too well, they look for an easy to penetrate or open burrow.
The gopher's paranoia about openings is what draws the gopher to the trap you set at the burrow opening.
"I feel a draft! Better plug it now if I don't want to be lunch!"
He grabs a bunch of dirt and pushes it forward to plug the opening and unwittinglly into the trap.
If you go the trap route remember to adjust the trip mechanism so it has a "hair trigger" and try to situate the trap so the gopher can't feel the trap with his feet as he pushes dirt through it to toward the opening.
Hope this helps, Good Luck! P.S these traps look cruel, but compared to the agonizing slow death anti-coagulant baits, ect. they're really more humane. Conciousness is reportedly usually lost in seconds after the trap springs .....

First you have to make sure it is a gopher. There are different products for different animals.
Check out this link:

Outdoor dogs and cats can help to keep your yard free of pests.
There are also predator wildlife urine that you can buy from pet stores or over the internet such as wolf, fox and coyote.
