A pretty serious thing to ignore your conscience about, no?
Why wouldn't you enjoy performing an abortion if it's a good thing?
Or, do you feel that it is a bad thing? If so, why would you ignore your conscience about something with such great implications as life?
If your conscience bothers you about something important, think long and hard before ignoring it.

I think if you have mixed feelings about it you shouldn't do it. You either have no problem vacuuming a living being(by the time a baby is 8 weeks along it has a hear beat) out of its womb or you don't. No gray area there. Maybe you should focus on teaching women not to have sex if they don't want children. Why is that so complicated?

You're exactly the type of level headed person who SHOULD become a doctor. Good for you. If you're interested in Endocrinology you will have a very limited exposure to D&C's as a part of your OB/GYN rotation in medical school.
Your respect for the safety and ethics surrounding choice and procedure are commendable. You are in highschool? Impressive.
You will see a lot of opinions offered on this board. Some come from informed people but many are emotion based and come from those with limited education or professional medical background. Yes, a fetus has a beating heart, eyespots (depending on the stage of development a rudimentary eye and retina) but so does a toad. I have examined hundreds of fetuses at work, variable stages of development, and have performed autopsies on plenty of babies too, unfortunately. I can tell you that there is a HUGE difference between the two, particularly in neurological development. There is a reason anti-choice propaganda pushers use cute smiley infants in their posters; a fetus is a very different creature and would make it more difficult to manipulate an audience of kind hearted but terribly misguided folks.
Good luck in your studies and thank you for your intended contribution to society.

I think that you are right. the abortion decision should be between the woman and her doctor, and only her doctor for the matter of if it is a safe option in her particular case.
honestly, for me it isnt a matter of morality, it is a matter of personal medical decisions.

I think a woman must have the right to decide whether or not to have a baby. These situations are never to be taken lightly, and birth control is a must....but it can fail and if it does, and your patient doesn't want to have that baby, a safe abortion is her right. And I would never have a problem with a reputable physician performing that surgery. I would never want our government or anyone to tell me I have to have a baby that I do not want. I have 3 beautiful children, but motherhood is not for everyone, especially at certain times in life, such as at a young age, or when financially or emotionally ill prepared. Adoption is not always the choice for everyone, though it is a wonderful option. I truly believe no one has the right to tell a woman what to do about a pregnancy.

I think my answer is a NO. Aborting is wrong and kids getting pregnant is also wrong.... Its all twisted and confused... more and more women getting pregnant... unless you want to earn a decent salary by doing so many operations then go ahead... but the act itself is a sin. LOL

My daughter is presently in college preparing to be a doctor, and hopes to be an OB-GYN with plans to be an abortion provider. She very much believes in a woman's right to make choices, as do I. She and I have discussed my abortions and she has spent time observing abortions. None of this has altered her convictions altered. In fact she has said she is thankful to have had the opportunities she has had so she has not gone blindly into this area. Keep your goals in focus and you will make a fine doctor.

I think women need to have this option available to them. I agree with Deidre.
Abortion has been politicized as a means to distract from other issues, e.g., the growing chasm between the rich and the middle class who are slipping lower on the socioecomonic ladder. I don't believe Republican leaders give a rat's tootie about abortion. I do believe that they adopted this issue to court the vote of the conservative religious groups.
So, you go girl.

Thank God there are those who choose to help women. Those against women choosing safe, medical abortions as a alternative to unwanted preganancy, (no they do not use them as an alternative to birth control), should start adopting all those unwanted, starving, abused, trafficked children or keep their foolish ideas to themselves. They don't have a clue.
Women have turned to abortion to end unwanted pregnancies throughout the ages. In the U.S., induced abortion was common among Native Americans, and it was legal from colonial times to the middle of the 19th century. But unclean, primitive medical practices made it very dangerous. To protect women’s lives, laws against abortion began to be passed during the mid-1800s. But by the middle of the 20th century, cleaner, more advanced medical procedures made safe abortion possible. All U.S. laws against abortion were overturned in 1973 by the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade. Today, abortion is legal nationwide and is one of the safest of all available medical procedures.

Sigy- I agree with you and think you would be a great doctor. I only came to this forum because of your question, but, I am appalled at how many men I see opposing abortion. I think it is ridiculous. Also, I am pro-choice, and, I have accompanied a friend to an abortion. I would NEVER personally have one, but, I understand the reasons to do so, and, I think it is a matter of personal choice.

I agree with you. I also do not necessarily like the idea of an abortion but I feel the option should remain available to women. There are many legitimate cases and it's something that politics and religion shouldn't be involved in.
