Washington was an accomodationist, and was labeled "The Great Accommodator" by Du Bois.
Washington felt that cooperation with supportive whites was the best way to go to achieve benefits for blacks and to overcome racism. He felt confrontation would lead to disaster for blacks. Du Bois and other leaders (especially those in the NAACP), felt a harder line should be taken on civil rights protest, and more confrontation should be done.
Washingtons form of accomodation wasnt simply putting up with things, and not working for change, but to skillfully accomodate and work within the conditions while working with those who could help to overcome the conditions
