Ok.. some of you people need to go back to Jr High, and pay attention in science class. Thunder is the sound created from lightening. This question is about as debateable as whether you should turn your computer off or leave it on all the time. Personally, I never turn my computers (that's right.. I have 5 of them, and one in my truck) off unless I'm upgrading hardware. While a surge protector or lightening arrestor helps with lightening strikes, the real solution is an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS). It's basically a big battery for your computer.

The other side of this debate is the probability of your house being struck by lightening. Is it really that likely that it will happen?

So in the end, I guess it comes down to whatever makes you comfortable. If you feel better turning it off during a thunderstorm, go ahead. Or, if you want to keep it on, then in my opinion, feel free to do that too.

Turn off the computer if there is lightning nearby. Better yet turn off the surge protector that everything (computer, monitor, modem, etc...)should be plugged into. Surge protectors will not protect against a direct lightning strike. They might claim so but don't, Lightning hit right outside the building where I work and it fried one of the computers. Tons of info lost.

Yes, I heard that there is some chance of being hit by lighting during thunder storms even if all you hear is thunder.

Shut the computer down in lightning storms. If your computer took a shock you could blow your hard drive and lose your data.
