It's easy to work out. write your 8 bits as lines along the page, then start with 1 as the first bit, the second bit is 2X1 = 2, the third bit is 2X2 = 4, the fourth bit is 2X4 = 8 and so on until the eighth bit which is 128 (2X64). Add all those numbers together and you get 255 or 11111111 in binary.
