I have bearded dragons and want to get a ceramic heat emitter for the winter nights. They are in a 40 gallon tank. How many watts should the ceramic heat emitter be?

As long as its not getting below about 60 F at night they should be fine. You might think about saving up for a larger tank or even another tank. So that you could seperate them, or at least give them a larger area to live in. 2 basking spots for 2 Dragons as well. If they are both Male they will fight.

It all depends on how cold your house gets. If it doesnt' go below 60F, you don't need nightime heat. Dragons need a dark cooling off period at night for good health. If you need to use one, just be sure whatever size it is that you measure the temps with a digital probe thermometer. The wattage will depend on how far you plan to put it--check out the recommendations here:

i suggest you test it with the help of a thermometer and ordinary lightbulbs - it depends on your setting and whether you are planning to use it with a thermostat or not

it would be better with a thermostat so that they get the heatiing only when the y need it

apart from ceramic heater, you can use red night bulbs (about the same price or even cheaper, would help you watch your beardie after "lights out"
