hello..I paid August rent in money orders...I dropped them in the night box like I have always done for the past 3 years..and have never had a problem,.

I was informed by the leasing office that they never got posted,. which means they lost them.I had the money order stubs so that they could find them..and they made copies.. Plus I had to bring in the stubs twice fo rthem to make copies of becuase they lost the 1st copies!! They are telling me I need to trace the money orders! It costs $90.00 to do this, and right now money if tight.

I feel like I did my part..now its up to them. They trust me to pay rent, I trust them to cash and post those rent checks.

My question is: Shouldnt it be the leasing offices' problem and job to trace the money orders, and figure out what the hell THEY did wrong?

You just initiate the trace for 90.00 bucks, then file a claim with the land lord or the property management company. Since you have been there 3 years without a problem, perhaps others in your building had the same problem for the month of August also - like a theft from the box drop or an inside accountant - check with others who lease spaces from the unit and see what surprising answers you get....also check with your local PD and see if there have been similar crimes occurred in that area or the integrity of the landlord. Hope this helps....

Are you sure it will cost $90? How many money orders are we talking about? I know it takes quite a while to stop payment on money orders (like several months) but I never heard the cost would be so much.

Since you bought the MO, you will have to initiate the trace. However, you are fully within your rights to require the landlord to cover any costs that you incur.
