Faith No More sounds very emo/screamo, or 80s hair metal
but they are actually funk-metal / hard rock

You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead. I first heard of this band because it was listed in the CMJ Loud Rock chart, several years back. Thinking it was a metal band I called the record company who told me that, they had no idea how it wound up on there. I heard the band several years later on an EA Sports soundtrack, and yes they were right.
Smashmouth- right off the bat you think great name for a hardcore band, then you hear something like All-Star and ask WTF??? Same with GlassJaw.

I always though Blue Oyster Cult would be suggestive of metal, but they're not.
*edit
Maybe it was the umlaut ontop of the O, whenever I see umlaut, I think Motorhead.... I'm just glad I'm not the only one who thought BOC was metal....

Bare Naked Ladies...a band of several not so pretty or trim guys from Toronto....when they first started in the late 80's, early 90's they were suppose to play at city hall in T,O, and i believe, it was canceled b/c of their name.......

Blaqk Audio
Sounds almost like a hip-hop name, but it's like an electronic "goth" side-project of AFI.
