I just bought this a Yamaha Virago 920, it is my first bike, I have no manual and need help with some simple maintenance questions. It has an oil leak, starter sounds bad, has no dipstick (how do you check oil level?) what type of oil do I use, does it require a higher octane fuel, location of oil plug? Are there any other quirks or problems with this model I should know about or be wary of?

Noise - bad starter clutch components - common problem with Viragos.
Oil leak - clean the engine with "Gunk Engine degreaser" - sprinkle some white baby powder in the area of the suspected leak and run the bike - the baby powder will discolor at the site of the leak.
Check oil level - below the oil fill cap is the "oil level sight glass"
Start and run the bike for a few minutes to circulate the oil throughout the engine
Turn off the engine and let it sit for a few minutes to allow the oil to drain down to the crankcase.
Check the oil level with the bike straight up and down (as if you were sitting on it).
The oil level should cover 3/4 of the oil level sight glass.
Use quality, brand name, 4 stroke motor oil - 10w40 in cold weather, or 20w50 in warm weather.
I get better gas mileage with premium. Experiment to see what works best. Worn out engines require different octane than other bikes.

Hi Zak, Regular owners manual is available from your local Yamaha dealer, or, for probably twice the price you could pick up a full repair manual (from Clymer, Chilton, or Haynes). I believe those bikes have a site glass ( small round window on side of engine) fill oil (10w-40) to about 3/4 to top of window. Probably run fine on regular, but, if worried use midgarde, oil plug on bottom of engine case (I think, see manual). Grind 'O' matic starter was standard equipment on the early Viragos. There is a little trick to help it out, but, requires some disassembly.

I assume those are the float bowl vent tubes. If that is the case, the float level must be too high or the floats themselves must be shot. This is a very simple problem for a trained mechanic to fix. You should take it to a shop.
