I got mine at Home Depot, with a discount for taking it on credit, 1150 square feet, everything included, free delivery, $1500.00, I brought back $200.00 for overkill. for a total of $1300.00 very nice siding, three years now, no complaints.
I did almost all the work myself, never did do siding, no big deal but, I do have all the tools.
Three days, including the clean-up.

RE:
Vinyl siding? How much does it cost to install myself?
1000 square foot home. Estimates seem high, I'd rather just make my bf do it but not sure how much the material will cost?

Around here vinyl siding ranges from $50 - $100 per square. There are different quality levels, and some colors cost more. You can add 20% to you cost for trim pieces that you will need (j-channel, starter strips, corners, etc.). Most people I have seen are able to do it themselves with pretty good results. It is easy to work with.

Vinyl siding is not that expensive if you can buy it from a wholesaler. Cut the middle man out. I have a 1100 home and paid $2400 for Aspen vinyl siding . It would have cost double that at Home depot or Lowes.

Unless your planning on paying yourself to install the siding, its free, wont cost you a thing to have it installed. If your referring to the cost of the materials it will depend on wether you insulate under it or not, how many corners you have and windows. A 1000 sq ft house will cost you about 90cents to about 1.25 per square foot to buy the materials for the house without insulation to buy all the materials you need. Thats not including soffetts and facia.

Our 2000 square foot home cost approximately $7k. That is with shutters and edging. However, if he has never done it, it would be very difficult to do unless someone who is trained could help. The problem areas are the windows and the soffit.
Good Luck
