Most Australians (me included) will advise you NOT to tan, I'm naturally darker skinned (Aboriginal) and the women in my family took pity of fair skinned wanting to tan. Your skin will age decades and look like old leather luggage. Wide brimmed hats and staying out of the midday sun works.

Australia is the Skin Cancer capital of the world.

Use a fake tan and protect your complexion, if you must go into the sun use 30+ sunscreen, wear a hat and a shirt. Bronzers are great too! Besides, Aussies will tease you mercilessly if you aren't too careful, walking around like a cooked lobster isn't a good look, let alone getting skin cancer which could really mess up your weekend.

A dark tan is neither good nor healthy. Have a look at the UV forecast chart here
http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/national/charts/UV.shtml
and that is for today, late September. By December the entire chart will be extreme with figures in the far north in excess of 18.

If you stay too long in the sun you will burn, and badly! That is guaranteed!

Go up north. Why do you want to anyway, it looks horrible.
