I wanted to connect my Macbook to the internet via an ethernet cable, so I disconnected my desktop's ethernet cable from my Motorola SB5101 Cable Modem, then plugged in my laptop. I ran the network diagnostics program on my Macbook went through several steps, then it told me to restart my modem, which I am unaware of how to do.

Does anyone know how to restart this cable modem, or better yet, some help for a new laptop owner who would like to connect to the internet using a wired connection?

Thanks for the willingness to help :)

If there's no switch on it, just pull the power plug from the cable modem. Wait 30 seconds to a minute or so. Plug it back in.

If there IS a switch, it may just be a "standby mode", so you might STILL have to pull the plug to really "restart" it.

Once you've done that, restart your Mac and it should auto-detect the connection.

Note: The reason you need to restart the cable modem and WAIT 30-60 seconds or so is because many cable companies use the computer's "MAC address" (a unique serial number on each network card on each computer) to make sure you are not running multiple computers on your connection at the same time. That restart and delay will USUALLY clear out the MAC address that they have listed for you and allow you to "replace" the "old" machine with the "new" one.

Good luck!

Well I can help you with the cable modem, the cable modem can be restarted by unplugging the power connection in the back and then plugging it back in. I have that cable modem, that's how I restart mine all the time.

As far as helping you network your mac, you shouldn't need that right, it's a mac...Sorry don't know how to do the mac, could never get my brother's macbook to work with his DSL connection a while back, booted his PC up and in 5 minutes had it online so, can't help much with the mac thing.

rux, ain't real familiar with that modem, but in the back of the modem there's usually and on and off button. another way is just to pull the power cord count to 7 and reconnect. That's a restart also.

hi there
another way to do it is:
open internet explorer(mozilla, firefox ...) and than write 192.168.100.1(this is ip of the motorola cable modems)
than maybe u will see a web page, where u can restart your modem via button(restart :) )
P.S. the other modems may have other ip
