Menopause isn't an illness. All women go through menopause. Our brains and female body parts put out hormones that control when an egg comes down, when we have our periods, etc. As we age, the body doesn't do quite as good a job of controlling the hormones. If we have surgery like a hysterectomy and have the ovaries removed, we immediately go into menopause - even if we are only in our 20s. So both brains and body parts control the hormones.

I was told we have only so many eggs inside us but I don't really believe that to be true. I think that when the hormones get confused as we age, they get old also and aren't good enough to create a baby. That's why women in their 40s a lot of times have problems conceiving - the hormones are off but not off far enough to cause the periods to stop. Around 49 yrs old the periods may get irregular or stop completely. There have been women who get pregnant in their early 50s so everyone is different.

Just because the period stops, doesn't mean all the hormones stop too. Some women bothered by PMS during their lives might still get a touch of it every month right around the time they used to get their periods - until their body finally quits making that particular hormone.

It's not something you can avoid. It's just part of life. Just as you get your period, you stop your period.

Another way to look at it is with chickens. I have chickens and when they are young, they lay lots of eggs (kind of like us having our periods in the fact of the egg coming down to be fertilized). The eggs come out in the chickens whether they are fertile or not - whether there is a rooster around or not - same with us. As the chicken gets older, there are less eggs until the chicken just stops laying altogether. That's just the cycle of life.

When the hormones slow down, women may grow some hair on their face - like on their chin - just a few dark hairs - not like a man. With the chicken - even though only the rooster crows - a chicken that has her hormones changed because of her age, will also start to crow - not a very good crow - but a crow just the same.

Hope that helps.

Menapause begins when a woman's natural hormone production begins to diminish. It is part of the aging process. Symptoms vary greatly from person to person.

It happens to all women eventually, though the symptoms may be so slight that all she notices is that she no longer has monthlty periods.

Menapause can also be caused by surgery that removes ovaries and/or uterus.
