To do deep breathing:

in-hale deeply threw your nose hold it for as long as you can, then ex- hale threw your mouth as long as you can, (28 seconds is a good count) you will feel like you tummy just hit your back bone if you are doing it right. at first you will cough. this is normal Coughing is normal, your body isn't use to this heavey breathing. . Breathing exercise is just like any other it takes practice.

I can't speak about what happens to a former smoker but I can tell you (from attending a meeting at a rehab center by a fellow who had been a recovering alcoholic for 24 yrs) that even it if was 24 yrs since her last drink, the very first one she has, will act on her body as if she had been drinking the entire 24 years. And it would kill her. Now 3 months isn't 24 years but you get the idea. The body would act like she never stopped.

I like to look at alcoholism as an allergy and the 24 yr thing as anaphilactic shock where the throat closes up. Or where you get stung by a bee and your whole arm swells up. The body reacts to the alcohol pretty much the same way but on a physical and psychological level.

Everything begins to heal.and also it depends on how long you drank and how much you smoked.if you smoked alot then it will take a while for your lungs to heal an if you drank for along time then who knows how long it will take to heal your liver.
