I disagree ideas are free. It does not give you the right to read a book and decide to write one just like it. It may not be plagiarism, but it is unprofessional and will earn you a very bad reputation in the industry. Quite honestly being inspired by other authors isn't always a very good idea. It does lead to copying ideas. That is why the saying is "write about what you know." Start out writing about things and people who are close to you. Short stories. When you have a good, original idea then start thinking about a novel. Pax - C

Go to the bookstore and buy one of the Writer's Digest magazines. This is one of, if not the most informative writer's tools you will find anywhere. The articles are written by publishers and established authors and they can and will help you with anything you need to know about writing that perfect novel. In my opinion and in the opinion of these self-same authors, this magazine helped many of them become the writers they are today.

writing in the style of a favorite author, or in the same genre is not copying. Ideas are free...its the words on the page that are yours (or theirs) alone and the thing that makes your (and their) work unique. If you sit down and copy word for word any part of someone else work-- you're in for a law suite.

Copying is simply if your plot is incredibly similar, to the point where they are nearly identical.

Inspiration would be if you just write in a similar style. like if you are constantly addressing the reader and make references to songs it becomes obvious you were inspired by Stephen King, even if your book is nothing like any of his.

If you are writing a book similar to your favorite authors, create your OWN characters and flesh them out. Make them real. Put them in a similar situation and watch how things can go wrong.....

MY heroine clobbered my hero. I know its sad, but that happens in real life.
