Germany Schaefer, sometime around 1908 (the specific date, alas, is a bit elusive).

The correct answer is: It has never happened.

That seems obvious, but this is a better question than it seems to be, because rules have changed over time. However, nobody has ever been credited for a steal of first base. The rules have never allowed that.

Germany Schaefer is known for running backwards from second to first on the pitch to set up a double-steal of second and home on the next pitch, but even at the time, this was not recorded as a "steal" of first. It did, however, lead to a rule banning running the bases in reverse to confuse the defense or make a "travesty of the game."

The dropped third strike happens often, I've seen it a few times in the last few weeks. However, the batter is not credited with a "steal" of first. He's credited with a strikeout, and either reaching on a wild pitch or passed ball, with the possible combination of an error.

Rules have changed over time. For example, a base on balls was once counted as a hit, and stolen bases were once credited to runners being advanced by the batter's hit. The inability to steal first base, however, has never changed.

It's not possible to steal first base. The only ways to reach first base are by a hit by pitch, error, a single, a walk, catchers interference, a dropped third strike, or by a fielders choice. This is in the modern game, however. There was one man, a powerless hitter named Germany Schaefer, that did it, but it was around 1906, and it led to a rule change. Its kind of complicated how it happened.

The Germany Schaefer folks are correct. he was not credited with it as a steal, but he ran from second BACK to first to try to draw a throw for a double-steal.
The rules were then changed so that you are out if you run back to a prior base like that.
But people who automatically answered "no" were in error.
