It's a fine name as long as it's a nickname for Elizabeth. To me Liz is too informal to be a complete given name.

I have two friends named Liz (short for Elizabeth), both great!! But it's not the name that makes them great, it's who they are inside!!

Well I don't think of it as a name, so much as a nickname. It's actually my least favorite shortening of Elizabeth, I'm afraid. I'm not sure why, but it's just always seemed so harsh to me. Not to mention the fact that I simply like some of the other options -- such as Nell, Eliza, Lily, Livvy, Betsy or Bess -- so much more.

From experience, most of the Liz's I know are older (say, 25 to 60). Those on the older end of that spectrum seem to have somewhat dull, dry personalities (slightly negative, not much sense of humor, etc.), but I doubt that's indicative of the nickname itself. LOL Just a coincidence. ;)

The younger ones have generally tried to get friends and family to call them by one of the other above-mentioned shortenings, but generally to no avail (it's harder once you're older, I suppose), but I'm not exactly sure WHY they've disliked Liz after living with it for so long. I do know one was often called "Lizard" because of it, and hated that, so I'm certain that was her reasoning, but I can't speak for the rest.

Hope that helps!

Liz is a great name-it brings to mind Liz Claiborne, who just happens to be my favorite designer. She was a pioneer in the design industry, and a strong woman.

A strong name I generally associate it with an intelligent and studious woman . One who is successful in business and also a super mom!

Strong and well-grounded. Liz can be girly and yet not be perceived as weak.

I like it.
