You have to see Dancer in The Dark... at some point in your life, if not tonight. It's slow until about 1/2 way through, then it picks up and takes off like a rocket. It's the saddest movie I've ever seen, and definitely the most underrated. It's won tons of awards, was nominated for at least one oscar, but most people have never heard of it.
At Play in the Fields of the Lord -- awesome movie about missionaries looking to convert an aboriginal tribe in South America -- it's messed up.
UPDATE: Little Children... not sure how I forgot that one. It's a pretty dark movie, don't judge it by the cover.

The Client with Susan Sarandon is a fantastic movie, or if you something with more action, Sentinel is really good too.
