Here is a list of items you should register for for your baby.
From personal experience, I can tell you to reigster for a travel system(infant car seat and base, stroller)....and don't go cheap on this! Get a nice one, they are well worth the money. The ones made by Graco are excellent.
A good swing is also nice. I received the Fisher Price Ocean Wonders swing and my son loved it. It is very versatile in that it swings from side to side, AND front to back. It was one of my (and my son's favorite items!)
If you plan to bottle feed, register for plenty of bottles. They have nice newborn gift sets, and I recommend the Avent bottles, or Playtex Ventaire.
Make sure to ask for plenty of diapers and wipes, also diaper rash ointment. I would only register for a pack or two of newborn sized diapers, babies tend to outgrow these quickly! Same thing with clothing, register for a few newborn size things, but ask for more 0-3 and 3-6 month clothing.
A Pack N Play is also nice. Many of them have things such as changing tables, and bassinet inserts, which save you from having to also register for a seperate bassinet. My son is 8 months old and the Pack N Play is a lifesaver for me!
I do not recommend a Diaper Genie. I never really figured mine out, and the refills get costly. Many places have small holders that contain scented bags in which to place your babies diapers. I had a clip on one that I clipped to his bassinet, and it was always on hand. These are only about 3 dollars.
Also, make sure to register for a newborn health kit. I received one that had a thermometer, nasal syringe, nail clippers, etc.)
Anyways, check out the link that I posted at the beginning of the post. Work with that, pick out things that you like (and think that baby will like), and get excited for your shower!
GOOD LUCK!

Some people will tell you to get 1 of everything - some people like me will tell you - you only need 2-3 things babies don't use items all that much...it depends on the type of mom you are..
if you plan to hold yoru baby for close parenting all the time you will rarely use anything other than maybe a co-sleeper for your bed and a baby carrier
if you plan to make sure your little one from the start knows you are not a 24/7 baby holding machine - then you should get a bouncer that vibrates and a baby swing.
Other must have items
a boppy pillow - whether you breast feed or not they are great support for holding baby for feeding
a safe place for baby to sleep - crib, playpen, co-sleeper whatever works for you and your family
a bumbo chair (3 mos on) it helps baby sit and learn to sit up properly without flopping over - most wonderful thing in world for baby's first feedings at 4-6 months (almost don't need a high chair if you use one of these)
A nice touch/extra is/are
I used a blanket to lay baby down for tummy time but you can use an activity blanket - very important to get tummy time for babies to help build up arms, neck, and back muscles so baby can learn to support there own head then be strong enough to crawl and walk.
from 4-6 months you might want to get one of those activity play things kids sit in (formally walkers) stationary is better, something with 5-6 activitiies to keep baby occupied they help build back and neck muscles very important for walking
good luck - hope this helps

Go to babies r us and look over their checklist. I got a book called "baby bargains" which is great at rating baby products. I would highly reccomend not registering for baby clothes. Everyone buys them for you anyway. I got way too many and didn't register for any because I knew that would happen. We also got waaaaay too many stuffed animals. Baby blankets and bibs were other items that we got way too many of as well. people like to give those as gifts.Good luck to you!

A baby swing for the house is a real must. They come w ith soft seats and mobiles or just simple swings. It is very resting for them and frees your hands for awhile. They are also great to nap in so that baby can be in same room as you are and you can be doing other things. This stores easily and can be passed down to future kids.
