In the journey of life most human beings remain so engrossed in the trivialities of life... we forget to look at the broader aspect of life. Dominated by ego... most human beings remain confined to their own pattern of thinking. This limits the scope of our thinking... the rational approach towards life! We truly live in a cocoon of our making!
When someone expresses an opinion different than ours... we either accept it immediately or altogether ignore it! This results from our thoughtlessness... our egoistic approach towards life! We do not want to believe in what others say... we stick to our pattern of thinking... right or wrong! Such tendencies leave no scope for rational approach towards life!
The dialogue of Plato... logistical approach towards life is not only the best but the only solution to a problem! And what are dialogues of Plato? Either you convince me... or I convince you... whoever wins the end is the final winner! Nothing is superimposed on the thinking of others. All accept it willingly!
Logistical approach towards life is also termed as Samvad in Hinduism! To live a meaningful life... the dialogues of Plato, Samvad in Hinduism... logistics in every affair of mankind is the best solution! None is a loser in the end. The Man of Wisdom always wins the end... For such people logistics is the only approach towards life!
Most human beings dominated by their ego and wanton desires do not hear the sweet small inner voice of our soul atman that seems to come from within our heart. Devoid of the sweet small inner voice of our soul atman... life goes haywire! The sweet small inner voice of our soul atman always guides us on the right path.
Mounted with this power of soul atman... Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed finally gained enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and salvation (moksha). The voice of our soul atman can be distinctly heard by one who follows the path of absolute truthfulness... never otherwise!
Living a truthful life is the best goal in life! The human form has been manifested by our soul atman within to eradicate the impurities... the dross within! Our soul atman is the master and controller of the body. The goal of cosmic life also belongs to our soul atman. In the circumstances letting loose our ego is falling prey to vices and wanton desires!
Travelers on the path of spirituality always try hearing the sweet small inner voice of our soul atman! Guided by the voice of our soul atman human beings finally cross the ocean of Samsara (worldly life). Establishing absolute control over five senses and the mind they finally reach the end goal of life... the 8.4 millionth manifestation when one gains enlightenment! I've listened to a lot of people's point of view. Other people's teachings (especially my good parents) shaped me to be a good person, too.
To this day, I gain fresh insight, new knowledge, and wisdom from people I listen to.
I then incorporate those things that jive with my own experience into my life. As we grow older, things change, and so must our way of thinking. Without being able to listen to other people's point of view, we would stagnate, and fail to grow better and better as we change with time.
The older we get, in my opinion, the better person we should become. If we're not getting better and better, more loving and caring as we age...what's the point? There would be no good "direction" or "reason" for us to keep going. As I get older, I know I'm becoming a better person with time, and I hope I live long enough so that one day, I'll almost be "angelic" like.
But like everybody on this planet...I've got a long way to go.

Lots of times we just hear ourselves, or stuff related to us. This makes it hard for us to relate to other things or people.
Or else we're so far away from seeing ourselves that nothing makes sense.
Because of this too closeness or far awayness, we don't conform well within the social structure.
There there's some concept of social void and vague wording about our souls being introduce to this void.

That which aids the biological imperitive inevitably wins out against that which does not.... not to mention that which actively opposes it.
Thought processes that are geared toward self-promotion tend to gain priority over those which self-demote.... and as such, the average person will defend their own views and accept affirmation for them FAR more easily than they will accept anything which opposes their own beliefs..... as all such lines of thinking reflect directly upon their own apparent value.... both socially and personally. "Right" is valued over "wrong".... and thus everyone wants to be "right" subconsciously, irrespective of what in any objective sense that actually corresponds to.
Their subconscious tends to register "being right" as "being more fit" which leads to living longer, getting more / healthier mates and producing more offspring.... and thus will promote the image that the individual in question (themselves) is right without question.
To actually think things through objectively, to take in multiple viewpoints and consider them equally.... requires that a person's ability to reason is stronger than their instinct.... which, as it happens, is rather rare.

I haven't a clue. People who want to be understood speak in clear terms. I don't understand your friend's "void". I have no void. And since there is no evidence of a soul, we can leave that one be for the moment. I have no soul.

You create your own reality and it can be difficult to cut through it. Robert Anton Wilson wrote some great stuff about this. He called them "reality tunnels."
