So let's assume that abortion becomes illegal. My question is simple: If its illegal, what should the penalty be for getting an abortion anyway?

There would be no penalty. Abortions would go underground as they were before they were legal. Police spend a lot of time persuing felons and real bad guys, so a few well-placed dollars in the right hands would keep any scrutiny from being placed on that industry. When there is a market, businesses have a way of springing up to meet the need.

It would have to be whatever the penalty is for murder.
However, in the eyes of the law, if the baby is under a certain age it is not considered murder. So, it would probably vary depending on how old the baby was. Also, if it is illegal to get an abortion I would doubt a doctor would do the procedure. It would be very hard to try and cover up the procedure. If the mother decided to kill the baby herself it would go back to the first part of this answer. How old was the baby? Was old enough to be considered a human?

The laws would probably be much more harsh for the doctors that performed the procedure than for the women who got them. It would probably be a fine or less than a year in jail for the woman, and the doctor would lose his license to be a doctor and probably get significant jail time.

Unfortunately, the punishment is eternal. It's something a woman can never run away from. Killing a little baby is against God's commandments. "Thou shalt not kill." Just because there are those who say abortion is OK, doesn't make it so. The emotions you carry for a lifetime isn't worth it. Either use protection, wait till you're married and want a family, or educate yourself on your options. But don't kill an innocent baby for your mistakes.

Since most Doctors would not break the law, the penalty would/could be death since an unlicensed person would probably be performing the "service".
