You can't. The balance sheet will only show dividends payable IF dividends have been declared, BUT NOT PAID.

If a firm declares and pays WITHIN the period, then you won't see anything called dividends on the balance sheet.

If you want to know how much a firm paid in dividends over a quarter or year or what ever, then you need to look at the statement of owners' equity. This statement reconciles the the ending OE from last period and this period. This will have an explicit line item stating how much was paid out in divs over the period.

If you only have the balance sheetm then, as and estimate, you can calculate:
CY retained earnings - LY retained earnings - CY net income. This will give an approximate estimate because there are a couple of other oddball things that affect retained earnings that are not related to income or dividends.

It isn't a balance sheet item. Try looking at the Statement of Cash Flows.

You can also get this information from Yahoo! Finance. Look for "Key Statistics"

You can see the dividends payable on the CREDIT side of the balance sheet. i.e.Liability or owner's equity side. If working on the horizontal balance sheet then on the right side and if its the vertical style, then the lower half.
