I know that you can be fired if warned, but I just want to know if it is illegal for them to try and dock my pay a penalty fee for being late?

It is legal to be fired for being late if you have been warned. They only have to pay you for the time you are there. There is no penalty, just less time worked means less pay.

If you are paid by the hour they can doct your pay for that time (example: 15 minutes late. Doct you for those 15 minutes), but penalize you? Not sure what you mean. If you mean you are automatically being doct a certain amount of money (example: $15.00) every time you are late even by 15 minutes that is totally not legal. If you are paid annually (salaried employee) they cannot doct your pay. It is illegal under Wage & Hour laws that is overseen by your states Department of Labor.

They can deduct your pay...why should they pay you for a full hour of work if you didn't work the hour?

However, a flat-rate fine? Is illegal in ALL states.

The easiest way to avoid it, is to show up on time. If you are late so often that you actually have to worry about it, then your job is already at risk.

They could certainly dock you for the time you were late, don't have to pay you for that, but if they're doing something beyond that, no. They can fire you though for being late.

Hell No. They can't fine you. They can not pay you for the time you missed, but they can't penalize you economically any more than that.
