"Ideals" are simply the extreme most end of our thoughts about how we could be.
Nobody is perfect, though, and in fact, perfection is an impossible state to ever achieve.

"Idealists" are in a state of denial. They think "perfection" can be achieved, so they will become more and more cynical that "realists," who know that "ideals" are a directional marker, rather than a "destination."

Seeing the world the way it really is helps one see that in all nature, human or otherwise, there is a healthy balance between everything. Too little of something is just as bad as too much of something. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Don't fix what's not broke. Everytime we make one aspect of our lives simpler, we make another aspect harder. Look at computers. Have they enabled us to trim down our workload? Quite the opposite. They've made it necessary for us to work harder and more often, because they made other things simpler.

I believe the 8-hour work day is almost inhuman. After six hours of work in a day, I'm exhausted. The last two is spent in exhaustion and endurance, rather than productivity.

So if we could make the same amount of money in a 30-hour or less work week, I think humanity in general would be better off. But, alas, there are workaholics in life that are making it harder for us "leisureholics." They never stop and appreciate a sunset on the beach, and more and more prevent us from doing so.

That's my biggest pet peeve of employment.

No, I don't think they do. Cynicism is a choice. It requires effort to be negative. You can be a realist, and sometimes the tumble from being an idealist to being a realist feels like a fall from the greatest of heights, but I don't think you become a cynic just because you see the old whore without her makeup. Seeing her without her makeup, and assuming all women look the same, and always will, is cynicism. Simply knowing that she herself is unattractive is merely being realistic. There's a world of difference between the two. I think the shock you feel is not one of becoming a cynic, but rather one of just becoming a realist. Cynicism takes a concerted effort if you want to succeed at it.

"More" is a subjective term. To what or whom are you comparing cynicism? Is there a starting point for cynicism which we can use to quantify who has more, the idealist or the realist? If I am to use logic to answer and the foundation of logic is mathematics I need numbers to quantify. Sorry, but that's how I was taught in Philosophy.

Not I, as soon as yo allow anyone or anyting to make you cynical you have surrrendered to "Them" (Them being those who really ARE out to get you). Even though I know that it's hoeless to want the ideal situation that doesn't stop me from trying, if for NO other reason than to tick ALL the Realists off.

((You come up with some good ones.))

Yes, I think that is true. What are those called that never do "see" that actuality?

it all depends on how they react to things. no one person is going to be the same.
