"51" has, hopefully accidentally, given you out of date advice. There was an SRB bulletin relating to this problem issued in June this year.

On the quad engines (rather than the moped engines that I think 51 is referring to), the fetzer valve adjuster has to be set at 2.5 turns out. Running it at 3.5 for any length of time will cause your engine to effectively lose two of it's strokes, in effect you'll be left with a two stroke engine so you'll need to add oil to the fuel (use a 50:1 ratio and a good semi-synthetic oil such as Motul 2T Super if you decide to down this route), but do take care not to run it at full throttle for too long, as you may indeed damage (or even break) the powerband.

Personally, I'd run it at 2.5 to take advantage of all of the engine's current four strokes, but set the exhaust valve to have 16mm tappet clearance and sleeve down the carb to 4mm. This should increase airflow velocity through the carb and give better emulsification of the fuel for any given engine speed. You may need to replace the air filter element with a more restrictive one (not a freer flowing one, even though this may seem counter-intuitive) to take advantage of the increased airflow velocity or you may upset the stoichiometric ratio of the fuel/air mixture.

Hope that helps.

Many of the Japanese market quads AREN'T restricted. They are just built that way. The only way to to get more power, is to bore it out.

Take the exhaust off where it attaches to the engine and remove the washer that restricts the exhaust flow.

Always give year, make, engine size and model # when asking questions. We need all of that info to give an informed answer.
Everything is different.
