Its a small role, but good non-the-less. She is very strong minded, and firm but fair. She needs to be played as a very confident woman who knows what she believes in and that is the Save-A-Soul Mission.

I hate to correct Theater Doc but he's thinking of Arvide Abernathy, Sarah's uncle. :)

General Cartright is a firm woman who is a no nonsense kind of woman. She now she isn't bitchy or mean but she is a realist and knows if they can't fill the mission they need to close it down. Its a good role if you don't have a lot of experience in acting.

One of the things I remember is from the revival cast back in the 90's with Nathan Lane as Nathan Detroit. The general does this high 'Woooooooo' during 'Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat' number.

Since everyone who reads a thing takes away something different than others who have read it, no one who will see this question can tell you as much about the good General as the script. Read that. Then, if you have any specific questions after that, perhaps some of us can give you some hints, tips or insights, based on our interpretations of it.
